RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Any understanding of early Roman history through the literary sources must begin with an understanding of the nature of the literary sources themselves. My current research focuses on the historiographic processes by which Greek and Roman authors from Naevius to Plutarch constructed historical understandings of the Roman monarchy, as well as the utility of these constructions in the negotiation of identity.  Of course, the literary sources do not exist in a vacuum, as archaeological material provides a parallel avenue for the study of early Rome. The past century has witnessed great advances in the study of the material remains of early Rome and Latium, and my research ultimately seeks to understand the relationship between these parallel avenues.
